Feb. 8th, 2009 04:29 pmI haven't posted for a while, mostly because my life has been uneventful this week. Which is often a good thing. So today, just to let y'all know I'm still alive, I'll post some random stuff.
I went to see Inkheart again yesterday, and loved it more than ever. Right now I'm watching the A&E movie Shackleton, about the Antartic explorer and the amazing survival story of him and his crew, and it's very good. The set comes with the Biography episode about Shackleton (and I hope to God it's better than Jane Austen's, which was atrocious) and the History Channel's show about Antartic exploration (which I'll probably enjoy a lot).
And on the subject of Inkheart, one of the main reasons it's so good is Paul Bettany's portrayal of Dustfinger. I stumbled across this quote of Paul's which proves he's not just a pretty face, lovely body, and terrific actor: "The world is split into two kinds of people, those who would go out for a drink with John Lennon, and those who'd choose Paul McCartney ... After the Beatles came back from India, Lennon wrote 'Happiness Is a Warm Gun' and McCartney wrote 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da'. End of argument." Isn't that great??
I also got my hair cut yesterday. I no longer look like a shaggy dog.
I recently finished The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis, which is both a wonderful book to refresh your spirituality and a delightful satirical pleasure. Many years after the original publication of the book, Lewis wrote a toast that Screwtape supposedly gave at the tempter's college. Given how long ago it was written, it's not only great fun, but an amazingly accurate prediction, IMO. Here it is, if you want to read it:

I recently discovered something about myself. I have always known that color was something I was interested in, and that was important to me, although only in the most vague way. I love colored file folders, for example - they make it easier for me to organize things. Well, I now have a kind of proof of it. I play a computer card game called "Heartwild Solitaire", and in the bonus round, you have a spread of cards, plus a wheel like a slot machine. Whatever the wheel stops at, you have to find before time ticks out. The suits are different colors (purple, blue, pink, and green), and when the wheel tells me to find all the spades (or hearts, or whatever), I almost always can. But when it tells me to find all the kings (or tens, or twos, or whatever), I almost always can't.
(Well, I thought that was interesting. But probably no one else will. Still, it's akin to different learning types - you know, where some people learn better by listening, some by reading, some by following example.)
