Jan. 31st, 2009 07:42 pmJust saw Inkheart. It was wonderful!! My only complaint is that it was too short - it should have been three or even four hours long. It's a big book, and a lot happens in it, so condensing it to movie-length made things move so fast! I wanted to savor it. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can.
When I first thought of the book as being made into a movie, I was sure that it could not be cast properly. Brendan Fraser had to be Mo, of course - he inspired the character. But, in my mind, who could be Meggie? Elinor? Farid? Capricorn? Resa? Mortola? Fenolio? and most of all, Dustfinger? But they were all cast wonderfully. Paul Bettany as Dustfinger was simply amazing - not just his fire dance, as glorious as that was, but all the good/bad, tortured soul of him. (Someone needs to keep reminding me that just because he walked around naked in A Knight's Tale doesn't mean he isn't a great actor.) Helen Mirren is another of my favorites, and she was a hoot as Elinor.
Oh, but I wanted more. I wanted to spend so much more time with the characters and story. There was so much in the book that I missed seeing. However, given the restraints of the medium, I don't see how they could have done a better job. And I bet that audiences who haven't read the book will love the movie, too.
I was upset that it seems to be doing poor box office. I saw it in one of the dinky theaters in our local Majestic 12, and I almost had the place to myself. I doubt word of mouth will be quick enough to extend its run, and that bothers me a lot.
