In the current Writers Digest is an interview with Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner and other novels set in Afghanistan. To be brief: The interviewer asked why, with his interest in the issues in his native country, he chose to write fiction about Afghanistan, rather than non-fiction. *pulling hair* WHY DO YOU THINK, you MORON??? Hosseini gave the perfect answer - the interviewer had it backward. He writes fiction, has no interest in writing non-fiction, and his fiction happens to be about what concerns him in his life. I can believe some off-the-street idiot asking that question, but not someone who gets an interview placed in WD. The editors should have killed that particular question. Then again, maybe they didn't because his answer was so good. Still - sheesh.
