May. 24th, 2013 01:00 pmNormally I don't talk about my college, but I get the alumni newsletter and read it every month, believe it or not. The old school has joined the University of Maryland system, and since then they've done amazing things. I have never felt any particular desire to pass along any collegiate news here, because I figured that would be boring to anyone who didn't go to Frostburg, but this month's newsletter had not one but two items that I thought it would be nice to share.
The first item is news about a program called SERF - Sustainable Energy Research Facility. SERF is pretty much what it sounds like, a building devoted to research projects on sustainable energy. They've made some great progress, and they have applied it right there. The cool news is that they have now gone "off the grid" - that means they have cut off from all electricity and are totally self-sustaining. Is that cool or what?? I believe they may be the only facility of that kind in the country to go offline.
The second item was a '71 graduate, a female tennis player, and her difficulty in playing competition tennis in a time when female tennis teams existed but did not compete intercollegiately. She joined the men's team (she had to beat their top 6 players to do it), and her teammates had so much respect for her that once they defaulted a match and walked off the court because the opposing team refused to play against a woman. This year, she was the first woman to be inducted into the Bobcat Hall of Fame, and now the cool thing - the four surviving members of Frostburg's first women's tennis team, the team of 1912-13, showed up for the ceremony. The spokeswoman for the 1912-13 team said that she had been determined to live long enough to see a woman in the Bobcat Hall of Fame.
