Nov. 21st, 2011 04:54 pmI just got the call from Randi's neurosurgeon. The news is not good, but not as bad as it could be.
First, the aneurysm was larger and more complicated than even the doctors anticipated. The optic nerve was so "smooshed" (Dr. Rickert's term) that she was amazed Randi could see out of the eye at all. Then, while they worked on it, it ruptured. Apparently there was huge activity in the OR trying to get it to stop bleeding! She lost 2 liters of blood. However, they were able to siphon off most of it and keep the brain from being too damaged. Dr. Rickert says Randi will probably have a small stroke and will be in rehab for perhaps 3 weeks. She did wake up, she responded to her name, and she moved her left side. Her right side wouldn't move when asked, but when her toe was tweaked, it did, so she does have sensation on that side.
If we didn't have one of the best - if not the best - neurosurgeon teams in the country, she would have died. Seriously.
Anyway, it's too soon to say how much damage was done or what's going to happen next. I'll keep y'all posted. Now I think I'm going off into a corner and have a quiet meltdown.
